This is a recap of the tragic news that impacted our community during the 2023 school year. In honor of Sheriff Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer's memory, this is included in our newsletter so he is not forgotten.
Arrest Made in Connection to the Fatal Shooting of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy
In a recent incident, a man barricaded himself inside a home in Palmdale, California, before being apprehended and arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer.
On the day of the incident, a SWAT team surrounded the suspect's house. While some family members voluntarily left the premises, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Kevin Salazar, chose to barricade himself and initially refused to come out. After an hours-long standoff on Barrinson Street, law enforcement deployed chemical agents, prompting the suspect to ultimately surrender. Sheriff Robert Luna commended the deputies for their patience and professionalism in handling the situation.
Kevin Salazar, who was taken into custody, has been known to be dealing with schizophrenia for several years and was reportedly on medication for his condition. His family emphasized that they were not justifying his actions but sought to raise awareness about his mental health challenges. They revealed that Salazar had been struggling with hearing voices and that they had tried to assist him with his condition.
Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, the victim in this case, was found unconscious in his car by a bystander at 6 p.m. on a Saturday. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Clinkunbroomer could not be revived, and he tragically lost his life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators were actively seeking information about a dark-colored 2006 to 2012 Toyota Corolla that was spotted near Deputy Clinkunbroomer's vehicle just before the shooting occurred.
